TENNIS NOTES

GREENFIELD, MA - If anyone is interested in playing or if you want some information about the Greenfield Recreation Tennis League give Rick a call (413.863.4428). This is a singles Co-ed adult league. Divisions will be set-up by playing ability. Deadline to register is May 8. Click on the "league" tab for more information.

We are also looking for three more people to help out during our Junior League. Each person will be the person in charge at the brand new Davis St. courts for one evening this summer from 5:30-7:00. If you would like to volunteer and mentor the next American champion, call Rick.

FINALLY AND MOST IMPORTANT, We made it very easy to support the greatest clay courts around by joining the Greenfield Tennis Association. Click the "membership" tab above NOW. Our GOAL is to have 100 MEMBERS this year. Monies raised by memberships, and events sponsored by the GTA go right back to our Historic Clay courts to help the city purchase needed clay, calcium chloride, lines and nets. Please help to support this goal.
In addition, We still need volunteers to sit on the important membership commitee.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - The US Tennis association is moving the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships back to clay courts this year.

The junior tournament will be played Dec 5-11 at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation FL. Its been held on hard courts in Key Biscayne since 1998; before that it was played on clay in Miami Beach.

USTA Player Development general manager Patrick McEnroe said Wedsnesday he likes the switch to green clay because "if you if you play more on clay as a youngster, you'll become just a better all-around player."

The Orange Bowl includes singles and doubles events for boys and girls in 18-and-under and 16-and-under divisions.

Past winners include Roger Federer, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Andy Roddick, Chris Evert and Anna Kournikova. copyright 2011 by The Associated Press

Spring Greetings!
With Spring upon us and the snow almost gone, its time to dust off those tennis rackets and start thinking game, set and match! The GTA board met March 22 and discussed the 2011 tennis season:

1] Officers elected were Rick Miner, President; Chuck Connington, Vice President; Harry Bovio, Treasurer; Tim Prevost, Secretary. Anyone who would like to be on the board, call Rick Miner @ 413.863.4428.

2] We would like to see the clay courts ready to play on by May 1. Rick called Sandra Sheilds the DPW superintendent  and was told that is their plan also, (weather permitting). She will be calling for the 2011 price of the clay and let us know. There is still half a pallet of calcium chloride left from last year. This is enough to start the year off. We might have to buy another pallet for the remainder of the season.

3] We are into our 4th year of using the tennis lines. This will be our last year with these lines. NEXT YEAR WE WILL HAVE TO PURCHASE NEW LINES. In 2008 they cost $2,241.00. They will cost more next year! The Greenfield DPW will prep, roll and lay the lines down and nail about every 20th hole. We will finish the job! When they let us know an email will be sent to the group for volunteers to complete the job.

This the first entry in the blog. Hopefully we'll create tabs and sections for all the upcoming events and fundraisers.
